- One thing’s for certain in life: almost all of us will one day experience gray hair. Gray hair happens due to the natural aging process. As you age, the pigment cells that make melanin, a chemical that gives your hair its color, fade away. New hair grows in lighter in shades of shining gray, silver, and white. Gray hair often has a coarser texture, since while it loses the pigment or melanin, the hair follicle doesn’t produce as much sebum (the good stuff—your body’s natural oils which hydrate hair).
