Sustainable Haircare, Without Compromise

Once upon a time, we chose to do better. Hairstory was founded to create simply better haircare, and our sustainability story continues to unfold as we make every choice with care and consideration for the world around us.

Our Pillars of Sustainability

We prioritize sustainability in everything we do, with these three goals always top of mind.

Environmental Stewardship

In products and in processes, our approach is to do more with less. We limit our environmental footprint wherever, whenever and however possible.

Philanthropic Initiatives

Through 1% for the Planet, we financially support like-minded, hands-on organizations that do the heavy lifting in protecting and improving the environment.

Responsible Sourcing

When it comes to our formulas, Hairstory is an open book. We use only ethical and cruelty-free sources, and we list every single ingredient on our packaging.

Environmental Stewardship

From production to packaging, we’re making an impact by minimizing our impact.

Haircare that actually cares.

Since 2015, we’ve been creating revolutionary products that are better for your hair and better for the planet. Our detergent-free cream cleanser, New Wash, replaces traditional shampoo and conditioner in one healthy step. We also pioneered the use of low-plastic refill pouches for haircare—then became the first beauty company to utilize fully recyclable pouches.

Together, we’re making a difference.

We reduced our carbon intensity by 59%—that’s how much CO₂ goes into making our products—from 2015 to 2021.

Switching from traditional shampoo and conditioner bottles to 32oz New Wash reduces the amount of plastic waste by 85% and your water consumption by 30%.

We use 60% less packaging material for 32oz New Wash pouches compared to 8oz pouches.

We’ve opened 10 distribution centers across the globe (and counting!) to reduce the “last mile” distance between our warehouses and our customers.

90% of our products are manufactured locally, and localizing manufacturing in Portugal lowered carbon emissions for European customers by 86%.

Philanthropic Initiatives

Giving back has never been more important to us or to the organizations we support.

Power in every purchase.

Through 1% for the Planet, we donate 1% of every 8oz New Wash sale to high-impact water conservation and restoration organizations. Since 2018, the Hairstory community has funded $384,000 in donations to protect oceans, lakes, rivers and reefs around the world.

Responsible Sourcing

Our non-toxic formulas are intentionally created and intensely nourishing.

Cruelty-free formulas, always.

We’re Leaping Bunny certified, which means we will never test on animals. Leaping Bunny is the beauty industry’s most trusted cruelty-free certification.

Naturally derived ingredients.

Every Hairstory product is made with non-toxic, naturally effective ingredients and 100% natural fragrances. Instead of the harsh detergents found in traditional shampoo, New Wash uses a blend of essential oils, aloe vera and fatty cleansers to dissolve impurities in a gentler, healthier way.

Plant-based products (primarily).

While most Hairstory formulas are vegan, New Wash contains a protein derived from sheep’s wool. Keratin is key for New Wash’s moisturizing benefits, and we source ours from a farm in New Zealand known for its high ethical standards. We have yet to find a vegan substitute that is up to our performance standards.
