New Wash

  • Is New Wash a shampoo?

New Wash is not a shampoo. It's a cleansing cream. Shampoos contain harsh detergents that strip your hair of its good, protective oils while they clean. New Wash cleans using essential oils and fatty alcohols—and zero detergents—while removing dirt, oil and buildup.

  • Is New Wash a conditioner?

New Wash is not a conditioner. Conditioner does not clean the hair; it only replaces moisture after shampoo strips it. New Wash contains cleansing and conditioning ingredients.

  • Do you need to use conditioner with New Wash?

No, New Wash is a detergent-free formula designed to replace both shampoo and conditioner by cleansing and hydrating in one single step. It cleanses using essential oils that leave your hair's natural moisture intact for a soft, healthy finish.

  • Will New Wash clean my hair?

Yes! New Wash cleans using essential oils and fatty alcohols, all of which are naturally derived and biodegradable.

  • How often should I wash my hair with New Wash?

You can wash your hair daily or however often works for you. New Wash is so gentle that you no longer need to worry about stripping your color or drying out your strands.

When starting out with New Wash, we suggest sticking to your regular routine and finding your rhythm over time. Many people have found that they can go much longer between washes with New Wash.

  • How does New Wash work?

New Wash cleans hair with a custom blend of essential oils and gentle, naturally derived saturated cleansers that also help balance your scalp's natural oil production.

  • Will New Wash work for my hair type?

Yes! Check out the reviews—“life-changing” is a commonly used phrase by people with all different hair types. Take our quiz to find the best formula for you.

  • How long will it take for New Wash to work?

New Wash benefits hair immediately, but all hair types are different so some scalps need to adjust and may experience oiliness or flakiness. This transition period is natural and more commonly experienced by people with oily or fine hair.

  • My hair is still adjusting to New Wash after a few washes. What should I do?

When starting out with New Wash, we suggest sticking to your regular routine and finding your rhythm over time. New Wash benefits hair immediately, but all hair types are different. You might experience an adjustment period during which your scalp overproduces oil, like it was trained to do by detergent-based shampoos and over-cleansing. This adjustment period is natural. If your hair feels greasy or you have some buildup after using New Wash, there are two common reasons.

    • You might not be using enough New Wash.
    • You might not be rinsing it out thoroughly.

    Think ASMR:

    • APPLY: Apply  the same amount of New Wash as you'd usually use for both shampoo and conditioner—enough to coat hair like you would for a conditioner or mask.
    • SPLASH: Add a SPLASH of water to get a smooth, milky consistency; this will allow it to capture and bond to the dirt, buildup and excess oil.
    • MASSAGE: Then work it in really, really well by MASSAGING your scalp with the Massaging Scalp Brush.
    • RINSE: You also might not be rinsing it out thoroughly. New Wash bonds to impurities and requires extra rinsing to work it out. RINSE it out using the Massaging Scalp Brush or your fingertips.

Remember: It takes time to adjust to new habits and routines.  Your hair and scalp haven't yet acclimated to this new way of cleansing that leaves the healthy, protective oils to do their job.

After about two or three washes, your scalp and oil production should regulate and thrive with your new healthy routine!

  • Are New Wash pouches recyclable?

Yes, pouches are made with LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) and are fully recyclable under classification #1.

  • Will this clog my drain or harm my septic system?

No, all Hairstory products are septic-safe and will not clog the drain.

  • Why is New Wash Deep now New Wash Deep Clean? Are they the same formula?

New Wash Deep Clean is an improved, slightly reformulated version of New Wash Deep, created in response to customer feedback. It’s slightly more lightweight and doesn’t carry the strong apple cider vinegar scent, while still delivering the same oil-dissolving power of New Wash Deep. New Wash Deep Clean offers a better overall experience for those with an oily scalp and hair—same clarifying benefits, with a more refined feel.

Lift

  • Can I use Root Lift on wet and dry hair?

Root Lift is most effective when applied to wet hair, before heat styling. You can also reactivate Root Lift between wash days by zhuzhing dry hair with your fingers.

  • If my hair feels sticky after I use Root Lift, what am I doing wrong?

Root Lift is concentrated, so stickiness comes from using too much product or spraying it too close to the root. Spritz sparingly on damp hair, 6 to 10 inches from where you want to add volume or lock in curl definition.

  • Who is Root Lift best for?

Root Lift works best for anyone who has fine hair and wants extra body and thickness, as well as those who use heat regularly to style their hair. Anyone can use a little Root Lift—just keep in mind that it is heat-activated

Powder

  • How is this product different from traditional dry shampoo?

Powder does not contain talc and is not an aerosol spray. Plus our specialized formula gives Powder grip, so it works as a dry shampoo, volumizer, texturizer and styling tool.

  • Who is Powder best for?

Everyone can use Powder! It is dual-purpose; fantastic at absorbing oil between washes, and impressive at creating volume, body and texture.

  • Does Powder build up on hair?

Powder is extremely fine-grained and formulated to avoid building up on the hair shaft. Dry powders like this one are typically lighter than those propelled by aerosol, which combine liquid and solid and tend to sit more heavily on hair. Powder is light, translucent and eminently buildable.

Hair Oil

  • Will Oil weigh down fine hair?

Not at all. Oil is formulated with a lightweight blend of eight essential oils so it won't weigh down fine hair (or any other type of hair). If you usually stay away from hair oils, give this one a try—you will see and feel the difference instantly!

  • Should Oil be used on damp hair or on dry hair?

Yes and yes. Apply Oil when your hair is damp to either define your natural texture while air-drying or get a flawless, frictionless blow-dry. Oil can also be used on dry hair to smooth frizz or flyaways, seal ends and add extra shine.

  • Does Oil contain silicone?

Oil contains a single D2, water-soluble silicone called dimethicone to meet our performance standards for shine (high) and weight (low). Not all silicones are created equal. There are different classes of silicones, with a low or high molecular weight. This distinction is important when understanding silicones, in particular dimethicone. Dimethicone is an inert and non-toxic compound that softens hair and contributes to easier spreading and application. (It's used in many skincare products, too, because it's non-comedogenic.) It has a low molecular weight, which means that rather than having an occlusive effect and creating a barrier, it acts more like an emollient, helping to restore the natural barrier function.

The silicone substitutes Oil contains include isodecane to protect from moisture loss, Ecocert-certified coconut alkanes (with similar light-reflecting properties to silicone) and heptyl undecylenate derived from castor oil.

  • Will Oil make my hair greasy?

Oil is formulated to penetrate hair strands, not simply coat the surface. As long as you use the right amount—just a few drops at a time—it will be easily absorbed.

Undressed

  • Can I use Undressed on wet and dry hair?

Yes! Spray Undressed on wet hair or damp hair before blow drying for a touchable, understated blowout. Spray Undressed on dry hair to enhance waves and curls or give movement to straight hair.

  • How do I use Undressed to create soft waves?

For textured, undone styles, spray Undressed evenly on dry hair by raking one hand through and spraying with a swiping motion from the roots to the ends. If you have more dense hair, do the underneath first, then spray through the top. When Undressed is massaged in and brushed through, it shouldn’t feel like there’s product in your hair—the hair will absorb the product, making it feel tangle-free without a lot of grab on your comb or brush.

Dressed Up

  • How does Dressed Up protect my hair from heat?

Dressed Up has UV protectant ingredients to shield hair from the sun, plus a combination of polymers, vegan proteins and essential oils to protect against damage from heat tools up to 450°F.

  • Can I use Dressed Up on wet and damp hair?

Yes! You can use Dressed Up on damp or wet hair. For heat protection, you just need a little bit, and for texture, use a bit more.

  • Who should use Dressed Up?

Dressed Up is ideal for anyone who uses hot styling tools, as it protects hair from thermal and UV damage. It’s especially beneficial for color-treated and parched hair.

Hair Balm

  • Is the Hair Balm refill pouch recyclable?

Yes, this pouch is made with linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and is fully recyclable under classification #1 (polyethylene terephthalate, or PET).

  • I have curly, frizzy hair. Will Hair Balm work for me?

Yes! Hair Balm gives curls and waves instant definition and adds moisture to smooth frizz, all without weighing hair down.

  • Is Hair Balm simple to use?

Yes! Hair Balm is a one-step styling routine: just wash, apply and air-dry. You can use it solo to enhance your natural texture or layer it with other Hairstory styling products.

Bond Serum

  • What is bond repair?

Your hair is naturally made up of chemical bonds that are too small for the eye to see. There are three types of bonds found in our hair: disulfide bonds (which are strong), hydrogen bonds and salt bonds (which are weaker). They come together to form hair’s structural strength, elasticity and shine.

When hair is exposed to chemical services (like dyeing, bleaching and relaxing), pollution or heat styling, these bonds can break, resulting in reduced hair integrity. Bond Boost for New Wash and Bond Serum work to restore those broken bonds by penetrating the hair fibers with our exclusive ProTarget Technology™, which delivers crucial first aid exactly where your strands need it.

  • What is Bond Serum?

Bond Serum is a damage-repairing leave-in treatment that is applied to damp hair. Uniquely formulated with our exclusive ProTarget Technology™, it delivers concentrated repair and heat protection with a velvety lightweight texture.

  • Who can use Bond Serum?

Bond Serum is ideal for anyone who prioritizes the health and well-being of their hair and/or whose hair is:

    • chemically treated (e.g., colored, bleached, relaxed or permed)
    • heat-damaged from frequent use of styling tools like flat irons or curling irons
    • frizzy
    • dry

Enhance the repair benefits of Bond Serum by applying after cleansing with Bond Boost for New Wash.

  • How do I use Bond Serum?
    1. Start with clean, damp hair.
    2. Shake the bottle before using and apply to the most damaged areas of your hair, then work through from roots to tips. Use a dime-size amount for fine hair and quarter-size for thicker hair, adding more if needed. Do not rinse out.
    3. Let it sit and penetrate your hair before continuing with your regular styling routine
  • Is Bond Serum suitable for everyday usage?

Yes, you can use Bond Serum every day! Just make sure you use it on damp hair.

  • What is ProTarget Technology™ in Bond Serum?

ProTarget Technology™ is our exclusive double repair efficacy complex that combines cuticle-nourishing nutrients and a clinically proven bond-restoring complex that fortifies hair from within. It delivers twice the recovery benefits of other hair repair treatments, healing and preventing compromised areas like split ends, breakage and frizz.

  • Why is ProTarget Technology™ in Bond Serum unique?

ProTarget Technology™ delivers double repair efficacy—meaning it heals hair inside and out—thanks to its unique formulation with liposome technology that offers these benefits:

    • Targeted delivery and enhanced penetration: ProTarget Technology™ consists of liposomes, which are tiny sphere-shaped particles that can encapsulate active ingredients like vitamins, antioxidants or other beneficial compounds. Liposomes in ProTarget Technology™ encapsulate specific active repair ingredients like panthenol and ceramides, allowing for targeted delivery and enhanced penetration. This is particularly beneficial in hair repair because it enables the delivery of reparative or nourishing substances directly to damaged areas of the hair.
    • Protection of active ingredients: Liposomes provide a protective barrier around active ingredients, shielding them from external factors that could degrade their effectiveness.
    • Longer-lasting results: The controlled release of active ingredients from liposomes allows for a sustained and gradual release over time. This can result in longer-lasting effects compared to products without liposome technology.
  • Does Bond Serum work on all three types of hair bonds?

Yes! ProTarget Technology™ targets hydrogen, salt and disulfide bonds in the hair by addressing the moisture, pH balance and structural integrity. This promotes an overall healthy appearance and manageability of the hair.

Hydrogen bonds are formed between the hydrogen atoms of one amino acid and the electronegative oxygen of another; they are typically affected by water and heat temporarily. Hydrating ingredients in Bond Serum that attract moisture to the hair include panthenol, betaine, glycerin and propanediol.

Salt bonds are formed by the negative and positive charged portions of the amino acids in the hair; they are the most stable, at an acidic to neutral pH. Bond Serum is formulated at an effective pH and buffered with citric acid to maintain the natural pH of healthy hair to stabilize these bonds.

Disulfide bonds are formed between cysteine amino acids and are the strongest bonds in the hair. They contribute significantly to the hair’s structural integrity and strength. Disulfide bonds are affected by using products with an acidic pH to prevent swelling and damage that can occur at higher pH levels, and ProTarget Technology™ helps repair and maintain these important bonds.

  • Do Bond products pose a risk of protein overload?

No. Protein overload is caused by products that contain a large amount of hair protein in their formula. Bond Boost and Bond Serum contain only <1% arginine in its formula to synergistically work with other actives to strengthen the hair, decrease hair breakage, minimize hair loss, moisturize and (for those who color their hair) protect from the damaging effects of bleach.

  • Does Bond Serum protect hair against heat?

Yes! Bond Serum offers heat protection up to 450°F.

  • Can Bond Serum and Bond Boost for New Wash be used together?

Yes, we recommend using Bond Serum and Bond Boost together, as Bond Boost contains ingredients designed to interact with and repair damaged hair bonds. Through a combination of surface preparation, conditioning and moisturization, Bond Boost primes the hair to better receive the active ingredients in Bond Serum, ensuring a thorough repair approach. As a result, when Bond Serum is applied after cleansing with Bond Boost, its reparative components may have an enhanced ability to penetrate the hair shaft.

  • Is Bond Serum vegan?

    Yes, Bond Serum is vegan.

Wax

  • Is Wax solely for short hair?

Not by a longshot! Wax is amazing on short hairstyles, but it can also smooth edges, tame baby hairs, create separation, and seal split ends on any length of hair.

Primer

  • What is Primer?

Primer is a smoothing and moisturizing protection mist that infuses moisture, helps boost the efficacy of the next steps in your routine and primes hair for manageable styling. Rather than moisturizing hair through heavy and greasy emulsions, Primer is a weightless active mist with cutting-edge actives clinically proven to moisturize, detangle, smooth and protect hair from heat (up to 450°F) and external aggressors like humidity, pollution and UV rays.

  • Who can use Primer?

Primer can be used on every hair type and texture.

  • What does the texture of Primer feel/look like?

Primer is weightless and airy—imagine the texture as a delicate veil that effortlessly glides through your hair. As you spray it, you’ll feel a fine mist enveloping each strand, leaving behind a sensation of softness and hydration. Despite its lightweight nature, it offers substantial protection, forming a shield against heat damage up to 450°F. It’s not greasy or sticky; instead, it imparts a silky smoothness that helps detangle knots with ease. With each spritz, it infuses your hair with moisture, keeping it nourished and safeguarded against environmental stressors.

  • How do I use Primer?

Mist Primer over dry or damp hair. Use your fingers to distribute evenly, then style as usual.

Use solo before styling or as the last step of the New Wash Method: Pre-Wash, New Wash and Primer.

  • Can I use Primer on dry hair?

Yes, Primer can be applied to dry hair to moisturize, nourish, detangle and provide protection against heat up to 450°F from styling tools.

  • What is the technology behind Primer?

Primer is formulated with high-efficiency ingredients to moisturize, nourish and protect your hair in one step. Capilipid protects hair from UV rays and heat damage (up to 450°F), improves hair strength and protects hair color. Lilac leaf culture provides antioxidant and anti-pollution protection, smooths hair scales, reinforces natural protection and restores natural shine. Natural, upcycled betaine helps maintain optimal moisture and transport water at a cellular level for long-lasting moisturization.

  • Is Primer fragrance-free?

Yes, Primer protects your hair from heat up to 450°F.

Pre-Wash

  • What is Pre-Wash?

Pre-Wash is a scalp-purifying rinse that refreshes your hair and preps for wash day by removing unwanted product buildup, oil and dirt. Pre-Wash’s detergent-free micellar technology ensures effective and gentle cleansing, while prebiotics help balance moisture and improve the health of your scalp’s microbiome.

  • Who can use Pre-Wash?

Every hair and scalp type can use Pre-Wash. It is perfect for those with excess oil, product buildup and scalp irritation. Pre-Wash also helps with the transition period if you have just switched to New Wash from traditional shampoo.

  • How do I use Pre-Wash?

Section dry hair to ensure thorough application. Apply Pre-Wash to the scalp using the targeted applicator. Start at the roots and move along the parted sections, ensuring even coverage. Massage it into the scalp with the scalp brush or your fingertips. Allow it to remain on your scalp for 3-4 minutes. Wash your hair as you normally do with New Wash.

Use solo, before New Wash or as the first step of the New Wash Method: Pre-Wash, New Wash and Primer.

  • How does Pre-Wash work?

Pre-Wash’s detergent-free micellar technology gently and effectively cleanses while soothing the scalp with the prebiotics in its formula, derived from starmerella bombicola/brassica oil fermentation. Natural, upcycled betaine helps maintain optimal scalp moisture and transport water at a cellular level for long-lasting moisturization.

  • How does Pre-Wash help with the transition to New Wash?

The transition period occurs when your scalp has been used to harsh, drying detergents. In response, it produces more oil to combat dryness, even though that’s not necessary with New Wash. This is where the prebiotics and micellar technology in Pre-Wash comes in: It helps balance the scalp’s microbiome more quickly and absorb excess oil before you wash with New Wash, which effectively helps prevent the transition period.

  • What does the texture of Pre-Wash feel/look like?

Pre-Wash has a distinctive lightweight, thin, fluid consistency that effortlessly coats the scalp and hair strands, providing refreshment, moisture and nourishment without any greasy residue.

  • Can I use Pre-Wash if I have a dry scalp?

Yes, you can use Pre-Wash if you have a dry scalp. The prebiotics in its formula will help balance your scalp microbiome, while betaine helps maintain optimal scalp moisture and transports water at a cellular level for long-lasting moisturization. The results: a healthy and nourished scalp!

  • Can I use Pre-Wash if I don’t have any scalp issues?

Yes! Everyone can benefit from Pre-Wash, no matter the condition of their scalp. The scalp is constantly collecting dirt, oil, dead skin cells and product buildup that can impact follicle health. These factors can cause hair strands to become weakened and/or damaged. Pre-Wash’s unique technology refreshes your scalp for a better cleansing experience.

  • How often should I use Pre-Wash?

You can use Pre-Wash with every wash or as needed to help remove excess oil, dirt and buildup caused by hair treatments or styling products.

  • Is Pre-Wash fragrance-free?

Yes, Pre-Wash is fragrance-free, so it’s suitable even for the most sensitive scalps.

  • Is Pre-Wash vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes, Pre-Wash is vegan and Leaping Bunny Certified. Leaping Bunny is the beauty industry’s most trusted cruelty-free certification.

  • Is Pre-Wash safe for color-treated hair?

Yes, Pre-Wash’s detergent-free formula is safe for color-treated hair.

  • What is a scalp microbiome?

The scalp microbiome is a community of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, that live on the scalp. Like the skin microbiome, it provides the first line of defense against harmful pathogens, shielding the hair follicles and scalp from infection, toxins, irritation, hair damage and more. This results in a stronger scalp barrier and healthier hair.

In contrast, a disrupted and imbalanced scalp microbiome can result in irritation, dryness, damaged hair and sebum buildup and may even impede hair growth.

  • What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are ingredients that act as food for good bacteria on your scalp. In haircare products, they help keep the scalp’s natural balance of bacteria in check, which is essential for overall scalp health.

    • Balance the scalp’s bacteria: Prebiotics support the growth of beneficial bacteria, helping to maintain a healthy balance on the scalp. This can prevent issues like dandruff and irritation caused by harmful bacteria.
    • Soothe irritation: By promoting good bacteria, prebiotics help calm the scalp, reducing redness, itchiness and sensitivity.
    • Strengthen the scalp’s natural barrier: A balanced scalp is better at protecting itself from environmental stress and keeping moisture in, which prevents dryness and keeps the scalp healthy.
  • How to open Pre-Wash?

    Step 1: Twist and Open
Twist off the entire top cap.
    Step 2: Remove Seal
    Remove the interior safety seal.
    Step 3: Twist and Use
Before each use, twist off the applicator tip cover.
