Why does the US version contain phenoxyethanol while the UK version does not? A client used the Yuka app and it was rated "Bad" - how do I respond?
Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used in US and AUS/CDA formulations. The EU/UK version uses a different system (sodium benzoate and calcium gluconate) to comply with EU regulations that set stricter concentration limits. The US formulas are within FDA-accepted safe-use parameters. For the Yuka app concern: Yuka applies a blanket precautionary rating to phenoxyethanol in isolation. At the concentrations in Hairstory's US formulas, the ingredient is within parameters accepted by the FDA, Health Canada, and the EU (within their respective limits). The alternative to an effective preservative is an unpreserved product - a meaningfully greater safety risk. Hairstory lists phenoxyethanol fully and transparently rather than obscuring it. If a customer specifically requires a phenoxyethanol-free formula, the EU/UK version does not contain it. Whether that version is accessible outside the EU/UK should be escalated to the product/operations team.
