What Are Sulfates?

Sulfates are a class of anionic surfactants used in most conventional shampoos as the primary cleansing agent. They work by binding to oils and allowing them to be rinsed away with water. They are inexpensive, highly effective at removing grease and buildup, and produce the dense lather most people associate with a thorough clean. They are also among the most aggressive surfactants used in personal care products.

The most common sulfate in shampoo is sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS. Originally developed as an industrial degreaser, its effectiveness as a cleanser comes precisely from its indiscriminate nature. SLS does not distinguish between the product buildup and pollution you want removed and the natural sebum, lipids, and moisture your hair and scalp need to stay healthy. It removes all of it.

The Damage Sulfates Do

The effects of regular sulfate exposure accumulate over time and affect the hair shaft, the scalp, and the follicle differently.

At the hair shaft level, sulfates strip the cuticle of its lipid layer, the natural coating that protects the strand from moisture loss, mechanical damage, and environmental stress. A stripped cuticle is a raised cuticle, and raised cuticles cause frizz, roughness, increased porosity, and accelerated color fading in color-treated hair. The hair feels clean after washing because it has been scoured, not because it has been cared for.

At the scalp level, sulfates disrupt the skin barrier and trigger a compensatory sebum response. The scalp, stripped of its natural oils, accelerates oil production to protect itself. This is the origin of the greasy-within-a-day cycle that drives frequent washing, which strips again, which triggers more oil production. The scalp never finds balance because the routine never allows it to.

For people with sensitive scalps, conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, or skin that is generally reactive, sulfates are a known irritant that worsen rather than address the underlying condition.

Why "Sulfate-Free" Is Not Always Enough

Many shampoos marketed as sulfate-free simply replace sodium lauryl sulfate with sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, or other sulfate variants that are marginally less aggressive but structurally similar in their stripping behavior. These are often labeled with language like "gentle," "moisturizing," or "color-safe" despite operating on the same fundamental mechanism.

Other brands eliminate sulfates but compensate with synthetic thickeners, heavy silicones, and film-forming polymers that create a different kind of buildup problem over time. True sulfate-free haircare requires a different approach to cleansing altogether, one that does not rely on harsh surfactants of any kind and does not simply replace one problematic ingredient with another.

New Wash: Sulfate-Free Cleansing That Actually Works

New Wash, Hairstory's cleansing conditioner, uses a blend of gentle, plant-derived cleansing agents and conditioning emollients to remove buildup, oil, and impurities without any sulfate derivative. It is not sulfate-free in the sense of swapping one surfactant for another. It is built on a fundamentally different cleansing model.

For those with heavy buildup from conventional styling products, Deep Clean is often the right starting point before transitioning to Original or Rich for regular washes.

What to Expect When You Switch

The transition away from sulfate shampoos takes time, and this is worth understanding before starting. The scalp has been conditioned by years of aggressive stripping to produce oil rapidly and in quantity. When that stripping stops, the scalp does not immediately recalibrate. For one to three weeks, hair may feel different from what it previously felt like after washing. This is not a sign that New Wash is not working. It is a sign that the scalp is adjusting its oil production in the absence of the stimulus that was driving it.

Most people find that by the end of the transition, they are washing less frequently, their scalp is less reactive, and their hair is softer and more manageable than it was during the sulfate years.
