- One thing’s for certain in life: almost all of us will one day experience gray hair. Gray hair happens due to the natural aging process. As you age, the pigment cells that make melanin, a chemical that gives your hair its color, fade away. New hair grows in lighter in shades of shining gray, silver, and white. Gray hair often has a coarser texture, since while it loses the pigment or melanin, the hair follicle doesn’t produce as much sebum (the good stuff—your body’s natural oils which hydrate hair). Going gray doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice great hair—gray is one of the chicest hues, after all. Gray has never looked so great.
- Going (and staying) gray requires special care due to its unique texture and characteristics. Gray hair is coarser and more porous, making it more susceptible to dryness and brittleness. Gray hair needs moisture-rich, detergent-free, sulfate-free products to combat dryness and keep its icy hue true. Since grey hair lacks pigment, it can easily be tinted by styling products, pollution and even UV light. Using products with UV protection can help prevent environmental damage, and unwanted brassiness.
