How to Air Dry Textured Hair in 5 Minutes Using Hair Balm
A step-by-step technique for air drying wavy or textured hair with minimal frizz, using Hairstory's Hair Balm for definition and moisture without over-manipulation.
Detangle before washing
Before getting in the shower, comb through most of the knots in your hair. Starting with relatively detangled hair means you won't be fighting frizz and tangles after washing while the hair is drying.
Wash and leave cleanser on
Apply New Wash to soaking wet hair and massage it into the scalp and lengths. Leave it on for five to six minutes rather than rinsing straight away — this is when it is most effective. Complete the rest of your shower routine during this time.
Rinse and comb out knots
Rinse thoroughly, then use a wide-tooth comb to gently work through any remaining knots while the hair is still soaking wet. Do not wait until the hair starts drying to detangle — brushing drying hair will cause it to puff up and frizz.
Apply Hair Balm to wet hair
Pump about one and a half pumps of Hair Balm into both palms and rub them together until the product is evenly coating both hands — you should see a visible sheen across your whole hand. Work the product through the lengths of the hair from underneath first, then lightly take any residue through the top using fingertips rather than palms.
Shape the hair outward
Using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, comb the hair outward and away from the head rather than flat against the scalp. This gets air into the roots and prevents the hair from drying into a flat, triangular shape. Work in the direction of your natural movement.
Allow to air dry without touching
Let the hair dry undisturbed. Avoid the urge to run your fingers through it or scrunch it repeatedly while it's still wet, as this will disturb the pattern forming and cause frizz. If using a diffuser, hover it around the hair without pressing it into the lengths until a gentle cast builds up, then scrunch as desired.
Finish and adjust
Once fully dry, use your fingers to gently open up the texture and shape the hair. At this stage you can add a small additional amount of Hair Balm on dry hair to smooth any remaining frizzy pieces — apply it to wet hands slightly diluted with water, scrunch it into the sections needing attention, and twirl around a finger to re-define the pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can Hair Balm be used on straight hair, or is it only for curly hair?Hair Balm works on all hair types — straight, wavy, and curly. While people often associate cream products with curly hair, Nick and Sean demonstrate that it works equally well on straight and wavy hair, adding texture and definition. The key is adjusting the number of pumps based on your hair's thickness and the level of texture you want.
-
How much Hair Balm should I use when air drying my hair?Start with about one and a half pumps on soaking wet hair. Because Hair Balm is lighter and more water-based than many creams, it's forgiving if you use slightly more than needed — you can comb it through easily to distribute it evenly. The key is to rub it thoroughly into both hands before applying, and to work it through the lengths from underneath first, then finish with any residue on the top.
-
How do I get volume using rollers at home without a professional blowout?Apply Undressed to damp hair, comb through to remove knots, then section the front of the hair and roll each section around a medium-sized roller (roughly two and a half to three fingers wide), rolling from the ends all the way to the root. Set the rollers in alternating directions — one toward the face and one back — to create a natural seventies-style lift. Allow to dry under gentle heat or leave in for as long as possible before brushing out for a softer finish.
-
What is the best way to create a beachy textured look without salt spray?Undressed is a salt-free texture spray that creates the same beachy, tousled effect as a salt spray without the dryness or crunchiness. Lightly mist it onto damp second-day hair, then twist small sections into loose buns around the face, secure with clips, and allow to dry. The result is a controlled, lived-in wave that still feels soft to the touch. You can use as little or as much as you like — even a heavy application won't leave the hair feeling stiff or sticky.
-
How do I create a wet look that stays in place without using oils or serums?Root Lift works as a setting spray or light gel to create a wet look that holds its shape. Apply it generously to damp hair, comb it through from a deep side part all the way around the head, and use gentle heat to help it set. Unlike oils and serums, Root Lift forms a light cast that keeps the hair in place without looking floppy or greasy throughout the day.
-
Would Hair Balm help smooth frizzy fine hair while keeping the curl pattern?Yes — for frizzy hair with a natural wave or gentle curl, Hair Balm is the recommended product. Rather than combing it through, wet your hands, take a small amount of Hair Balm diluted with a little water, and scrunch it into the frizzy sections. Twirl them gently around a finger to smooth without disrupting the curl pattern. Using your fingers like a comb will create more frizz, so the scrunching method is key.
-
What is the best Hairstory product for a quick updo on second-day hair?Powder is ideal for a quick updo on second-day hair. Because it's a tint-free, oil-absorbing volume booster rather than a traditional aerosol dry shampoo, it won't leave a white cast and can be applied directly with the hands for more control. Apply it to the roots to add grip and lift, wet and rough-dry the front pieces or fringe for a polished frame, then twist the rest of the hair up and secure with a pin or bobby pin.
-
How should I wash my hair before air drying for the best results? The Hair Bros recommend using a scalp brush during the wash to stimulate the scalp and lift any buildup before cleansing. When using New Wash, massage it in and leave it on for about five to six minutes rather than rinsing it straight away — this is when it works most effectively. After the shower, comb out the knots before the hair starts to dry to avoid unwanted frizz and puffiness.
