What Color Processing Does to Hair

Every chemical color service, whether depositing, lifting, or both, works by opening the hair's cuticle layer to allow color molecules to enter the cortex. This process fundamentally changes the structure of the hair shaft. The cuticle, once raised and manipulated, never fully returns to its pre-color state. Color-treated hair is structurally more porous than unprocessed hair, which means it absorbs moisture and product more readily but also loses them faster. It is also more fragile, more prone to breakage, and more sensitive to heat, friction, and harsh ingredients.

The color molecules deposited inside the cortex during the coloring process are not permanently locked in. They are vulnerable to anything that raises or disrupts the cuticle in the weeks and months following the service.

Why Sulfates Fade Color

Sulfates, the surfactants responsible for lather in conventional shampoos, are the primary accelerant of color fade. Sodium lauryl sulfate and its derivatives work by aggressively stripping oils and buildup from the hair shaft. In doing so, they repeatedly force open the cuticle, and each opening is an opportunity for color molecules to escape.

Color-treated hair washed with sulfate shampoos can lose visible color intensity within the first two to four washes. Over the following weeks, the cumulative effect of repeated stripping produces the brassiness, dullness, and flatness that make color-treated hair look old before its time. Many people attribute this to the quality of the color service or to their hair type. The more likely explanation is the shampoo.
