There was a time when wash days were just about finding the right time to take a shower. Your biggest problems were maybe sharing a bathroom and saving the hot water. Or a cold surprise when someone flushed the toilet.
Showers were always about maintenance and hopping in and out. Plain and simple. Somewhere along the way, something shifted. There was a concept that the more things you have, the more wealthy you are.
The luxury of excess set the expectation that you'd basically live in your shower with a whole cast of new roommates: a double cleanse, a mask, a treatment, a leave-in, a styling cream, an oil, a heat protectant, and another styling product, just in case.
All these bottles and all this promise of better hair suddenly turned into what felt like a prison. Your time was no longer yours. It was your routine.
No one had ever questioned why "healthy" hair needed to be so high-maintenance. Michael Gordon, one of Hairstory's founders, questioned it. He questioned why hair looked better a couple of days after it was washed. He asked: could we do better with fewer things? Could healthy hair actually mean doing less and looking better?
We've learned that the answer is yes. Healthy hair eliminates the need to be so overdone.
At Hairstory, we've always believed that great hair starts by doing less and doing better. That belief made the quest of creation, and it made Michael, and all of us, obsessively low-maintenance.
Most people would be shocked to know that when we first created New Wash, it was actually paired with a conditioner. But you'll never see a single image, article, story, or post about that, because it never made it. When we started working with New Wash, we realized this creation eliminated so much. And it felt right, because we had to create better products, not just a grab bag of band-aid fixes.
We knew we were onto something, and we knew it would look radically different for people, and for companies launching new products every week. The truth is, we could make a ton of products. That's easy. But we realized you only need a few. The biggest wins we offer are time, Sundays, energy, and scalp health.
To create better products, we first had to understand that scalpcare is haircare. That's the only way to truly take care of your hair.
The Best Routines Don't Ask for Your Whole Sunday
Our mission, and our challenge, was always to make it just as easy without compromising the effectiveness. We wanted to win people over, so we tested iteration after iteration of haircare until we could clarify your scalp in just three minutes.
That's why we created a first of its kind, ever: Pre-Wash. A micellar scalp rinse with prebiotics, so your hair and scalp eat, too. You're flushing out buildup and feeding the good bacteria before you cleanse and condition with our New Wash.
It takes three minutes. Not a designated hour on a Sunday. It took a village to think like a hairdresser, a client, and a human who never has enough time. We needed to help people understand that your scalp is working for you, you're not working for your hair.
You're investing in your time by understanding that the best thing you can do is wash your hair with a scalp rinse and a detergent-free cleansing cream. Our obsession with making haircare as low-maintenance as possible led us here.
At this point, you're missing out. We like a little space in our showers over here. We're done saying we don't have enough time, because we got our Sundays back, and we look good as hell.
For those of you living life, not living in your bathroom anymore, we see you out there. We celebrate your choice to do more with less: less time, fewer products, and more. More time doing things that bring you joy.
Sincerely,
