On the Street: DanceAfrica
Every Memorial Day weekend, the streets surrounding the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in Fort Greene, Brooklyn are transformed into a cultural bazaar to coincide with their annual DanceAfrica program. While movement from Guinea is performed indoors, a less choreographed sort of theater happens outside – resplendent displays of hair, a showcase for afrocentric style and stylists, and proof of what afro-textured hair is capable of. What warms our hair-loving hearts is the relative absence of the chemical relaxing that robs natural buoyancy, complexity, and character.
