Welcome to Hair Stories
Hairstory is our company name because we help people rewrite their hair stories with extraordinary products, but also because we are fascinated by how hair can be an opening to learn more about a person’s inner life. During the past couple of years, we’ve published story collections that are archived here as rich sources of reference. But rather than continue to publish as a traditional periodical, we’ve set a new challenge for ourselves – to release a story in some form nearly every day to coincide with the redesign of our website.
Some of those stories can be told in a few pictures: Hairstory Studio hairdressers share “Before & After” photos of their work; New Wash converts who have quit shampoo for good pose for portraits; our photographer reports on style in the streets of New York and beyond. And for those people who still like to read (we know you’re out there), in-depth articles explore the special relationships between hairdresser and client, examine how hair expresses culture at large yet celebrates the self, and expose how hair can be both a tool of oppression and an act of rebellion. We also provide links to relevant articles that catch our eye in the wider press.
Our products inspire our customers to include the phrases “life-changing,” and “Holy Grail” in their reviews online, which is truly gratifying. But some entries are so funny, and others are so moving that we just have to meet the people behind them. So, we vote for our favorites (never easy), and invite the authors to our Manhattan studio for some hair magic – in exchange for telling us more about themselves on camera. These real hair stories are the heart of why we do what we do.
We hope you are inspired, informed, and that you share your comments. The conversation begins… now.
