A New Approach to products

5ShootProducts(NewsWash)EDITFINAL.jpg

Most people believe that their hair isn’t good enough: too thin, too thick, too dry, too oily, too curly, too straight, too wild, too limp, too much, too little… They turn to products to help, but what if we told you that some products actually hurt? Product companies want you to believe shampoo is the best thing you can do for hair, but we believe it’s the worst.

Shampoo creates the need for products people don't actually need, like conditioners and masques. And rather than focus on problems and forcing hair to do what it won’t, we’d rather ask our clients what they like about their looks and focus there. We think that fewer, better things lead to a fuller, better life… or at least fuller, better hair.

Expect a whole lot more from Hairstory products while buying a good deal less.

QUESTIONS

Ten years ago, professional hair care products were special because you could only buy them at a salon. They were important to salon profitability and because professional brands lived or died by the favor of salon owners they treated them well.

Today, hair care products are available online at company websites, at specialty stores like Sephora and Ulta, and at Amazon and other e-commerce giants. Salon owners can gripe about it, but that’s just how people want to buy. The salon channel is shrinking and sales that do happen are often first time purchases; every purchase thereafter can happen online – with free shipping. It’s just more convenient (and often cheaper).

We could have followed the old model, but why? Instead, we created an entirely new model that rewards clients’ trust but doesn’t rob hairdressers of future profits. Hairstory hairdressers earn profits as long as their clients keep buying, whether in person from them or online from us.

We don’t sell through specialty retailers and we don’t sell through anyone else online. We keep it a closed loop; we always know when a client buys and we always share the profit with their hairdresser.

Because we don’t use distributors or sales reps, we rely on word of mouth to grow and reward our hairdressers for introducing us to other hairdressers; about half of them have been introduced to us by others. It’s a wonderful win/win/win.
